Beyond “Mature”: Nigeria's Bold Leap into the Future of Instant Payments

When Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System received recognition from AfricaNenda Foundation for its NIBSS Instant Payment (NIP) platform as Africa's first “mature” inclusive instant payment system, it wasn't just another industry award, it was a signal of what's next.
For NIBSS CEO, Premier Oiwoh, the moment is both a celebration and a catalyst.
“This recognition is an honour and a testament to the endless effort put into advancing instant payments in Nigeria over the past 14 years,” he says. But more importantly, it's a launchpad: “This award has energized the NIBSS team; we're excited to build on this momentum and drive further innovation over the coming decade.”
The story of NIP is not one of overnight success, but of relentless adaptation. What began in 2011 as a simple funds transfer service has grown into a financial backbone powering everything from bill payments to QR transactions.
“The journey is simply one of continuous learning and evolving to meet the needs of our end users, the everyday Nigerian,” Oiwoh explains. That user-first philosophy has been critical in transforming NIP into a system that now touches nearly every household in the country. Behind the scenes, pivotal decisions helped shape that trajectory. One standout was the steady reduction in transaction costs. At launch, a NIP transaction cost ₦100 but today it costs just ₦2 to financial institutions. And the ambition doesn't stop there.
“We plan to further reduce prices till the service is free, not only to financial institutions but to citizens as well,” Oiwoh reveals. An audacious step toward true financial inclusion.
Recognition from AfricaNenda comes at a strategic inflection point. NIBSS, alongside the Central Bank of Nigeria, is already building the future through the National Payments Stack (NPS).
“This recognition matters because it has come at a time where we have launched the national evolution of the NIP,” Oiwoh says. The NPS is designed to go beyond maturity, integrating lessons learned while introducing new capabilities that will define the next generation of payments.
“With the NPS, we will have a more inclusive, secure, faster, and scalable instant payment ecosystem,” he adds. In essence, if NIP was the foundation, NPS is the architecture for the future.
The real measure of NIP's success lies in its everyday impact. From street vendors to large enterprises, Nigerians rely on it for instant, seamless transactions.
“It has been a truly transformational tool that has eased the burden of payments and enabled growth in all sectors of the economy,” Oiwoh notes.
Businesses, especially small and medium-sized enterprises, benefit from immediate access to funds, eliminating delays and reducing reliance on credit. At the same time, government revenues from transaction-related charges help fund public initiatives, creating a ripple effect across the economy. This success didn't happen by accident. At NIBSS, innovation is institutionalized.
“Innovation is not an isolated function, but a shared responsibility across the organisation,” Oiwoh explains.
Employees are not just encouraged, but expected, to contribute ideas, with each staff member tasked to deliver measurable process improvements. This culture has allowed NIBSS to stay ahead of challenges ranging from fraud to infrastructure limitations and turning obstacles into opportunities for advancement. So, what comes after "mature"? For NIBSS, it's about scale, reach, and leadership beyond borders.
“At the core of our mandate, we would like to see NPS be the second IPS to achieve a maturity rating and expanded cross-border payments,” Oiwoh says.
Collaboration with AfricaNenda has already positioned NIP as a reference model across the continent, opening doors for deeper integration with other African payment systems. The message is clear: maturity is not the finish line; it's the starting point for something bigger.
As Nigeria's instant payments ecosystem enters this new chapter, one thing is certain: the future won't just be faster, it will be smarter, more inclusive, and increasingly borderless.
